Pool Construction

pool building
Pool construction is the process of turning the mental blueprint of a swimming pool structure into a physical and tangible unit that can be seen and used.

Fundamental Requirements for Pool Construction

There are fundamental requirements that refer to the key elements that should be regarded when constructing a pool.

• A pool should have floors and walls which make the shell. The shell should be free from flaws and defects of any kind.

• Good water tightness. This requirement should apply when the pool is full or half-filled. It is possible to have a pool that ranges below the water table. In such a case, a tight shell prevents water penetration to the ground and also prevents water from the ground surface from sipping into the pool.

• Proper pool surface and interior finishing. The interior wall and floor surfaces of the pool should have smooth, attractive material. The smooth material makes it easy to clean the pool surfaces. Pools are a leisure structure, and the use of attractive material enhances the aesthetic view.

• Additionally, ensure that the water in the pool meets the clarity and purity standards.

• Walkways around the pool's perimeter and safety steps for anyone who is walking around the pool area. The safety steps should be less than 900mm from the water level.

• In some cases, swimming associations in different regions demand that pools specifically for competitions should have diving boards.

There are three main types of pools: fiberglass, concrete, and vinyl liner. The most notable element that distinguishes these three pools is the mode of construction.

i. Fiberglass swimming pools

Fiberglass swimming pools are built using reinforced plastic. The manufacturer molds it to a particular specification and transports it to the site. A hole or put whose size and shape match the fiberglass structure's size and shape are dug at the site. Plumbing takes place, and the swimming pool is fitted to the pit.

The next process involves filling for the spaces around the pool's perimeter by use of concrete or any other preferred materials.

ii. Gunite swimming pools

Gunite is a mixture of sand and cement. Building begins with the digging of the hole, and the necessary plumbing is set in place. The taskforce then uses rebars to create a framework grid. The rebars, which are placed apart by ten inches, are joined with a cable. Once the rebars are ready and set to their rightful places, they set the gunite coat by spraying it around the rebar.

In order to create the wet concrete material, water is added to the dry gunite mix and evenly spread across space. Within two weeks, the surface will cure, and it is ready for finishing. One can choose to do the finishing by placing pebbles, plaster or concrete paint designed for pool finishing.

iii. Vinyl Lined Pool

For this type of swimming pool, construction begins by locating a site and uncovering the ground on which you intend to construct the pool. The construction of a frame wall around the perimeter begins. The frame wall could be plastic, timber, or metal, depending on the owner's preference. The bottom of the pit is then covered with sand filler, and the workforce fits a vinyl lining to the perimeter wall.

The purpose of the lining is to hold water in the swimming pool structure. Vinyl-lined pools are inexpensive to build. However, they are not durable as the liner requires a replacement from time to time.

iv. Concrete Pools

Excavation takes place to sink a pit, and plumbing is done. The workers create a timber frame around the pit wall, and steel rods are also placed to reinforce the frame. They then empty the concrete and spread it to create a shell. After a few weeks, tile placement and plastering works are done to the shell's surface.
